“The biggest obstacle I’ve experienced is suffering from ‘overtraining’. For an extended period in my swimming career, essentially I pushed my body too hard for too long. I struggled with my energy levels on a day to day basis. I overcame this by employing a couple of different strategies. First, I created and implemented a daily monitoring system to keep track of my training. Second, I began meditating and really focussed on embracing the belief that ‘more is not always better’. Finally, I now place a greater emphasis on recovery, especially sleep.”

“I view life and progress like a rollercoaster, with slightly more up than down in each section. It’s about perspective: I don’t view the downward portion as a ‘setback’ because it’s part of the journey. I make an effort to not be critical of myself in those moments. I try to minimize my downs and maximize my ups. As an example, I hit 40 days of consecutive mediation; then as I started towards 50, I skipped a day – then two weeks. It was hard to get back into. I began to do a day on and a day off; now, I’ve found a balance of three days on and one day off. I don’t feel guilty when I don’t meditate: it makes me appreciate how I feel when I do. This helps me prioritise my habits – it’s all learning and practice.”

“I spent my entire life working towards my dream job: and when I got there it became a living nightmare. I had to reorganize my entire mindset, identity and career, and orient it towards a more fulfilling path. I think self-compassion is most important. It helped me immensely through my most challenging times. I remember someone once told me if you don't believe in yourself, no one will: I took that to heart. I’ve learned that it’s ok to allow yourself to be vulnerable and to turn to your community for support. Now, I set goals, keep track of them and check them every quarter. Even if you don't know where you are going, move in the direction that feels most right to you: having a sense of direction is more important than knowing your destination.”

“I recently had my biggest setback ever. During a competition in Miami a few months ago, I suffered a Grade-3 Meniscus teat that required surgery. Along with that procedure, I had two ankle operation performed on the same leg (Achilles lengthening, and ankle debridement). The most important thing I have learned about overcoming this particular setback is that you MUST have patience. I want to feel 100% and get back to all the things I’m used to doing: but I know that the body takes time to heal. Not letting myself recover fully first could result in another setback. It’s taken all the patience I have to deal with the frustration and anxiety. However, I’m feeling better and stronger every day and still doing enough to be where I feel as though I need to be.”

“Oh man, which setback should I choose from? I think I'll pick bankruptcy. That was the most frightening, and there is so much shame around money and financial setbacks. Despite all the fear around it, it was actually one of the most liberating things that has ever happened. My top tip for getting back on track is to keep your nose down and do today. When I'd get anxious about having poor credit forever, or not being able to get an apartment, I felt paralyzed with anxiety. Yet, when I took everything a day at a time, I realized most of what I had feared was either false or no big deal.”

“In college, I basically rode the bench for the last two years of my basketball career and it was heartbreaking. I made a decision early on that even though I couldn't directly change my playing time in games, I could control how hard I worked. I remember telling myself that real success is all about exhausting your potential, a concept I learned from the great UCLA coach, John Wooden. I outworked my teammates in practice and never stopped trying to get better and so I was able to end my career saying that I did my part. This shift in mindset during such a difficult time helped pave the way for me to be better able to rebound from adversity. Now, I see obstacles as opportunities.”
